Why Visit Carrapateira, Portugal?

Carrapateira is a small village in southwest Portugal, in the Algarve. Situated within the Costa Vicentina nature reserve in the municipality of Aljezur, the area is known for its beautiful beaches, rugged coastline, and natural landscapes.

One of the main attractions of Carrapateira is its stunning beach, Praia da Bordeira, just a short distance from the village. The beach is renowned for its long stretches of sand, crystal-clear waters, and is a popular spot for surfing and other water sports. Though stunning, especially at sunset, the Aljezur coast is still relatively undeveloped making it very attractive to nature lovers.

Rota Vicentina & The Fisherman’s Trail

Ramblers can enjoy the scenic hiking trails that wind through the hills and along the Carrapateira coast called the Rota Vicentina. The well known Fisherman’s Trail, which is a 4 to 5 day coastal trek, known for being one of the most scenic in the world, can be found here, and hikers along this route often make an overnight stop at Casa Presente Guesthouse.

Birdwatching - Lagoa dos Salgados

The wetlands and estuaries around Carrapateira are home to a diverse array of bird species, including herons, egrets, storks, and more. Birdwatchers can visit the nearby Lagoa dos Salgados nature reserve, or explore the local wetlands and marshes.

Kayaking and canoeing

Visitors can rent a kayak or canoe and explore the nearby rivers and estuaries that are home to a variety of wildlife such as otters, turtles, and seabirds.

Surfing

Carrapateira is a popular destination for surfers, with several beaches offering great waves for all skill levels. The village has a laid-back, surfer vibe, and there are plenty of surf schools and equipment rental shops for visitors who want to try their hand at this exciting sport.

Dolphin and whale-watching

There is nothing quite like watching dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Regular dolphin and whalewatcching tour boats go out daily (weather permitting) just 30 mins along the coast from Casa Presente Guesthouse. 

Horseback riding

Horseback riding is an ideal way to explore the hills and countryside around Carrapateira. There are several stables in the area offering guided rides through the scenic landscape.

Carrapateira is also known for its traditional architecture, with many village houses and buildings dating back several centuries. Additionally there are several notable cultural attractions in the surrounding area that are worth exploring.

Museu do Traje:

The Museu do Traje is a museum in nearby Aljezur that showcases traditional Portuguese clothing and accessories. Visitors can learn about the history and cultural significance of these garments, and see examples of clothing from various regions of Portugal.

Castelo de Aljezur:

The Castelo de Aljezur is a mediaeval castle overlooking Aljezur. Visitors can explore the castle ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Capela de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe:

The Capela de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe is a small chapel located on the outskirts of Carrapateira. The chapel is known for its beautiful frescoes and intricate tile work.

Mercado Municipal de Aljezur:

The Mercado Municipal de Aljezur is a traditional market where visitors can browse stalls selling fresh produce, crafts, and other goods. The market is a great place to experience local culture and sample regional specialties.

Centro Cultural de Lagos:

The Centro Cultural de Lagos is a cultural centre in nearby Lagos that hosts a variety of events, including art exhibitions, concerts, and theatre performances. Visitors can check the centre's schedule to see what events are happening during their stay.

Carrapateira Village

While far from being a bustling tourist destination, the sleepy Carrapateira village offers several tasty dining options where you can enjoy local specialties or even grab a pizza.
